Hey Stephen,
My name is ________. I’m an undergrad at ________ University majoring in media production. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your podcast. I graduate next week, then I’m headed to LA for an internship at _______. It’s a very scary step for me. I’ve had this rain cloud of potential failure hanging over my head lately. I feel like one of those penguins huddled in a mass at the edge of a glacier, looking down into the water below. There could be a killer seal lurking beneath those waters, waiting to bite my head off. I hear so many stories of people jumping into the world of filmmaking only to be spit back out. This is why your podcast “Don’t Argue With the Road” couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. You described how people sometimes focus on the finish line instead of the actual journey to the finish line. We seem to measure ourselves by what we have done instead of how we have done them. This is the part of the episode that really spoke to me, but the entire episode (as well as your previous episodes) has had such a positive effect on my outlook. I can sit around and worry about what lurks underneath that water or I can just jump in and find out for myself. If there is a set of angry jaws waiting to clamp down upon me, at least I’ll know they’re there. Either way, standing on the edge looking down will accomplish nothing. I just wanted to thank you for making that clear to me. Your podcast has provided me with countless hours of entertainment and more importantly, countless life lessons. So in summary, thank you Mr. Stephen Tobolowsky for making the rain go away.
